Charity of the Month The Prayer Book Society (PBS)
The Book of Common Prayer is central to the Christian faith as practised by the Church of England. Originally
compiled in the sixteenth century by Thomas Cranmer and then modified in 1662, the Prayer Book remains the
official doctrinal standard of the Church of England and most other Churches in the worldwide Anglican Communion.
Cranmer’s cadences have given guidance and illumination to generations of Christians in regular worship and
at the turning points of their lives and continue to do so. The direct and unambiguous words of the Prayer
Book have become a familiar part of our speech.
Members of the Prayer Book Society, a registered charity, represent a wide diversity of background,
tradition and churchmanship, united by a determination to uphold the worship and doctrine enshrined in the
Book of Common Prayer of 1662. The Society was founded in 1972 when the Book of Common Prayer stood in danger
of being swept away by the tide of liturgical reform. Happily the Prayer Book has survived in a number of
lively Churches whilst in others it is marginalised to ‘off peak’ times. Young families and newcomers to the
church have fewer opportunities now to encounter it. The PBS is working to redress this situation. PBS exists
to advance the Christian religion through the use of the Prayer Book and to encourage its use through training
of the Clergy, also in schools and colleges, and ensuring the Society’s views are effectively represented at
Synods, and, finally. amongst the clergy and laity at large. PBS has recently celebrated 350 years of the
1662 Book of Common Prayer.
All the work of the PBS needs continual membership and funds to provide services across the board.
There is literature and membership forms on the top shelf along the south wall.
