Charity of the Month: People for You
The charity and scheme is a volunteer befriending idea for older, isolated people in Fairford, Lechlade
and surrounding villages. It is also available to Tetbury.
It is a sad fact that, with an increasing population and families scattered, many older people are
living alone with no regular company. The mission is to reduce loneliness and isolation – the scourge
of our modern society. A recent BBC News report revealed the ‘social isolation is associated with
the higher risk of death in older people regardless of whether they consider themselves lonely’.
Many researchers have suggested that this is possibly due to the emotional effects of isolation - that
feeling lonely is bad for your health.
Everyone needs someone in our lives, and it is a pleasure to introduce a local volunteer in their
community and to sit back and watch a beautiful, mutually sustaining friendship develop.
Finally, a quote from Mother Theresa ‘Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty’.
That says it all.
Any donations would be most welcome which will go towards funding social events. If anyone is interested please

GLOUCESTERSHIRE HISTORIC CHURCHES TRUST
September 13th
This is a great way to support this church and churches across the county when they most need help. So if you
fancy walking, cycling or horse-riding put 13th September in your diary. You can plan your own route between churches
depending on how far you want to go and whether you want to be in towns or villages.
You can get a sponsorship form either from the Parish Office (01285 712611) or from Geoff Hawkes,
Green Gables, Back Lane, Fairford 01285 712053.
Joint Outing
I am sure I can say on behalf of all those who went on the Friends of Fairford Church/Flower team outing -
a very big ‘Thank You’ to Geoff Hawkes and Heather Gorton for organising a wonderful day out to
Dorchester Abbey, Ewelme Church & Mary Berry’s Garden. The weather was very kind us in so far as
it was fine all the time we were out of the coach and only rained when we were safely travelling!!
Here are some of us in the very pretty courtyard of the Alms Houses at Ewelme.
When we arrived at Mary Berry’s Garden - the last thing we expected was to greeted by the lady herself.
She served our tea and provided us with a generous portion of Lemon Drizzle cake. Yummy!!
Well - what a fabulous garden - some of us leaving with some ‘garden envy’ I daresay.
Brilliant day out. Well done once again to the organisers!!
